Planned water supply maintenance for 20 to 25 April 2026

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing planned work in the identified areas, which will result in water supply disruptions. This critical maintenance work is done on our water supply infrastructure to benefit customers. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly.

Maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements

Residents are advised to store enough water in advance as a precautionary measure. Water should be stored in clean, sealed containers. This precaution does not guarantee all residents will have a water disruption, but it aims to ensure they can prepare if it does occur.
 
Planned maintenance work will result in a water supply disruption to these areas:

Parts of Somerset West

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will replace a faulty valve at the Louis Botha Reservoir. This work is necessary to ensure the continued reliability of the water supply network. To safely complete the work, the water supply will be shut off on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, from 08:00 until 18:00.
 
Gordon’s Bay

The water supply to parts of Gordon’s Bay will be shut off on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, from 09:00 until 18:00 to enable the maintenance team to replace a faulty Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV). This will result in a temporary disruption of water supply affecting the following roads: Miller Street, Faure Street, Gordonia Street and a part of Beach Road. Residents are advised to store water in clean, sealed containers for use during this period and to ensure that their taps are closed to avoid water loss and/or damage when the supply is restored.
 
Fish Hoek

The water supply to parts of Fish Hoek, will be shut off on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, from 09:00 to 19:30 and again on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, from 09:00 to 19:45. This will enable the safe completion of construction work on the main water supply. The affected roads in Fish Hoek will be: Castleman Road, Carmichael Road, Harrington Street, Berg Road, High Way Road and surrounding roads.
 
Retreat

The water supply to a part of Retreat will be shut off on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, Wednesday, 22 April 2026, and Thursday, 23 April 2026, from 09:00 to 19:30 to enable the safe completion of construction work on the main water supply to the area. The following roads in Retreat will be affected: Frankfort Road, Pollen Road, Julius Crescent, Farnmouth Road, Anderson Road, Hodge Road, Bud Road, Stingle Road, and surrounding areas, Retreat. Residents are encouraged to keep taps closed to prevent water loss and/or damage when the water supply is restored.
 
Oranjezicht

The City is currently undertaking two water pipeline replacement projects in Oranjezicht.

As part of the water infrastructure rehabilitation in Myrtle Street, Jagersfontein Avenue and Jagersfontein Lane, the water supply will be shut off on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, from 08:00 to 20:00, to facilitate connecting the new water main in Jagersfontein Avenue into the existing water main in Breda Street. The following streets will be affected by this shut off: Breda, Prince, Jagersfontein Avenue and Lane, Schoonder and Vredehoek Avenue.
 
Another water pipeline replacement project is taking place in Upper Orange Street, Belmont Avenue and Montrose Avenue. As part of this project, the water supply will be shutoff on Thursday, 23 April 2026, from 08:00 to 20:00, to facilitate connecting a temporary water main into the existing water mains. The following streets will be affected: Upper Orange, Alexandre Avenue, Belvedere Avenue, Belmont Avenue, Montrose Avenue, Rose Mount Avenue, Sir George Grey, Wynyard, Sophia and Forest Road.
 
Lotus River

The water supply to parts of Lotus River will be shut off on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, from 08:00 to 16:00. This will enable the safe completion of construction work on the main water supply to the area and will result in the disruption of water supply to parts of Lotus River. The affected streets fall within the boundaries of Strandfontein Road, Second Avenue, Buck Road and Fifth Avenue in Lotus River.
 
Rondebosch

The City will undertake planned maintenance work on six non-operational valves and the replacement of a fire hydrant in Rondebosch. A test shut-off will be conducted on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, from 09:00 to 14:00 and the actual shut-off will take place on Saturday, 25 April 2026, from 08:00 to 18:00. The affected roads include: Main Road between Church Street and Burg Street, Grotto Road and Lovers’ Walk and surrounding areas.
 
Parts of Kommetjie

The water supply to a part of Kommetjie will be shut off on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, from 09:00 to 19:30 to enable the safe completion of construction work on the main water supply to the area bounded by Van Imhoff Way, Husskison Road, Lighthouse Road and surrounds in Kommetjie. The following roads will be affected: Lighthouse, Dreyer, Van Imhoff Way, Crassula, Protea, Disa, Stelitzia, Nerina, Clan Monroe, Aloe and surrounding areas. These areas will experience no water during this period.
 
Part of Paarden Eiland

Maintenance teams will be doing a temporary shut-off of the water main on Thursday, 23 April 2026, from 09:00 to 17:00 to install a new connection to 6 Neptune Road, Paarden Eiland (Robertson and Caine). The affected area in Paarden Eiland includes: Neptune Road from Marine Drive to Carlisle Road, including Shropshire Road, Auckland Road and Carlisle Road. Residents and businesses are advised to store water in clean, sealed containers for use during this period and to ensure that their taps are closed to avoid water loss and/or damage when the supply is restored.
 
This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme, which ensures the future continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of unaccounted-for water.
 
Zero-pressure tests (ZPT) and conditional assessments will be done on the water supply network resulting in water supply disruptions in the following areas:

• Tuesday, 21 April 2026, from 09:00 until 17:00: Kraaifontein, Peerless Park East, Peerless Park West, Scottsville and Eikendal.
• Tuesday, 21 April 2026, from 10:00 until 16:00: Brackenfell North, Welgelee, De Tuin and Marlborough Park.
• Tuesday, 21 April 2026, from 09:00 until 16:00: Ravensmead West, Parow and Elsies River.
• Wednesday, 22 April 2026, from 09:00 until 16:00: Malibu Village.
• Wednesday, 22 April 2026, from 09:00 until 16:00: Manenberg South, Surrey Estate and Gugulethu.

Residents are advised to store water in advance as a precautionary measure in clean, sealed containers for domestic use during this period.
 
Zero-pressure testing and step-testing are part of the installation process for zone management infrastructure. Tests are done in advance to see if any unmapped inflows need to be considered before installing new infrastructure (such as pressure-reducing valves for pressure management).
 
In these affected areas, some residents may experience low water pressure, while some may have no water during the testing period. Unfortunately, it is not possible to predict which exact areas or streets will experience disruptions.
 
Additional zone management investigations will be carried out to ensure that the existing infrastructure is operating effectively. Pressure fluctuations may be experienced, but every effort will be made to minimise the impact as far as possible.
 
This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Strategy. Managing water pressure more effectively reduces the possibility of pipe bursts and water wastage.
 
Smart meter pre-installation survey (informative)

The City of Cape Town has appointed PPD Engineering and Hardware Supplies to carry out site surveys ahead of installing smart water meters. Teams will be visiting selected properties in Saxenburg Park 1 and 2, Kuilsrivier Industria, De Kuilen, Zevenwacht Country Estate, Sack's Circle Industria, Bellville South Industria and Bellville South from 23 April to 4 May 2026 as part of this process.
 
This forms part of the City’s programme to modernise water metering and improve how water is managed across Cape Town. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with the survey team where possible. Your participation will help ensure a smooth rollout of smart water meters in your area.
 
Leak detection in Dunoon, Mountainside, Gordon’s Bay and Site C, Khayelitsha (informative)

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be conducting visual leak detection in Dunoon, Mountainside, Gordon’s Bay and Site C (Khayelitsha) from Monday, 20 April 2026, to Friday, 24 April 2026, from 09:00 to 15:00. Leak detection is one of the water demand management interventions for saving water and reducing water loss through leaks.

• Leak detection team will be walking on the streets to identify potential leaks, check all pipe contact points such as valves, water meter and fire hydrants.
• All leaks will be reported to the relevant depot for repairs.
• Residents are advised that there will be no disruption in water during this exercise.

What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions:

• Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.
• All sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.
• Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means the work could take longer.
• For a short period after the supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like normal.

How residents are advised to prepare for planned water supply disruptions:

• Store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance for use during this period.
• Keep your taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage when the water supply is restored.
